Start Your NHS Career
Interested in working in the NHS but not sure where to start? This free programme is designed to help Waltham Forest residents take their first step into NHS employment — no previous healthcare experience required.
Delivered by Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust, the programme includes tailored training, hands-on experience in a real hospital setting, and direct access to NHS job opportunities.
Whether you're returning to work, changing careers or just beginning your journey, this pathway gives you the skills, knowledge and support you need to succeed — including guaranteed interviews and access to vacancies within the Barts Health talent pool.
Is This Right for You?
This opportunity is for you if you:
- Live in Waltham Forest
- Are aged 19 or over
- Are currently unemployed or not working
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Hold Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths
- Have basic digital skills
- Have some recent work or volunteering experience

What’s Involved?
- Register your interest using the link below
- Complete an English and Maths assessment
- Attend an information session
- Take part in an interview with Barts Health
- Join a one-week training course
- Begin your six-week NHS placement
- Get access to NHS vacancies through the Barts Health talent pool
What’s on Offer?
- One-week training course at Queens Road Centre or The Junction
- Six-week hospital placement at a Barts Health NHS Trust site
- Support with NHS applications and interviews
- Access to ring-fenced NHS job roles (Band 2–3)
Roles Available (Band 2–3)
- Admin and Clerical
- Healthcare Assistants / Theatre Support Workers
- Phlebotomists (experience or two weeks' training required)
- Medical Laboratory Assistants (Biomedical/Science degree; not in current study)
- Pharmacy Assistants (Pharmacology or related degree required)
What You'll Learn
- NHS roles and Barts Health values
- Understanding job descriptions and person specs
- Writing strong supporting statements
- Confidence and presentation skills
- Interview preparation
- Workplace practices: infection control, safeguarding, GDPR, Equality Act and communication
